They say inspiration can come from anywhere but few could have predicted Alex Panagopoulos’ doodle on DeviantArt would have lead to New Line starting a movie franchise with the help of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
This stunning drawing, described by Panagopoulos as “another fast and stupid one”, picked up steam when it appeared on popular social news and entertainment website Reddit back in 2011, and it’s not hard to see why. The drawing manages to tell a very evocative story of childhood fears, comforts and imagination similar to Pixar’s Toy Story and Monsters’ Inc.
So far, the details are slim on this project though it is tentatively named Teddy Bear and will be produced by Beau Flynn (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters), Hiram Garcia (Journey 2) and Johnson who is also tipped to star. Many news sites are suggesting the film has been picked up due to the success of recent blockbuster Ted but the potential for this story could stand on its own easily provided its done right.
The main question from me is what form the series with take: live action or animation? The current producer lineup suggests the former to me but, as a lover of animation, I’m holding out for the latter. I may just be holding out for a higher quality Samurai Lapin. In any case, this looks intriguing. What are your thoughts and fears over this project?
